EDINBURG – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Wednesday that University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer sophomore midfielder
Andreya Barrera has earned Preseason All-WAC honors.
Additionally, UTRGV was picked to finish tied for sixth in the coaches poll.
Barrera racked up the awards last season, earning UTPA Female Rookie of the Year, All-WAC Second Team and Madness WAC Freshman of the Year honors. She scored the first goal, road goal, home goal, WAC goal and postseason goal in program history. Barrera tied for fourth in the WAC in game-winning goals (two), fifth in goals (nine), and sixth in points (22), while also ranking ninth in points (43) and points per match (1.05) and 10
th in goals per match (0.43) and shots per match (2.05).
UTRGV earned 17 points in the coaches poll, tied with New Mexico (NM) State and just six points behind CSU Bakersfield, which was picked fifth. UTRGV and NM State each recorded nine more points than Chicago State, which was picked last.
Seattle U was picked to repeat as the WAC Champion, earning six first place votes for 47 points. Grand Canyon was picked to finish second with 39 points while Missouri-Kansas City, which tied for the regular season title last season, was picked third with 38 points after garnering one first place vote. Utah Valley picked up the remaining first place vote, taking fourth with 35 points.
UTRGV opens its season on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. when it plays host to Incarnate Word at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field complex. Gates open at 6.
