EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) 94-72 in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 2,002.
UTRGV (0-3) now trails TAMUCC (2-0) 12-11 in the showdown standings.
Sophomore
Antonio Green led UTRGV (0-3) with a career-high 26 points on a career-best 7-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. Junior
Nick Dixon scored 13 points with six rebounds and two steals.
Joseph Kilgore led TAMUCC (2-0) with 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field plus 8-of-11 from the line with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Jake Kocher scored 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting with three steals.
Rashawn Thomas posted a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Green opened the game with a trio of three-pointers and freshman
Xavier McDaniel Jr. hit one of his own as UTRGV jumped out to a 12-6 lead over the first three and a half minutes.
TAMUCC responded by hitting nine of its next 15 shots to go on a 27-8 run and take a 33-20 lead with 7:21 remaining in the first half.
UTRGV made six-straight free throws to pull within six, but Kilgore hit back-to-back layups to make it an 11-point game.
It was still an 11-point game at 42-31 when the second half started, but TAMUCC scored the first 11 points of the second half to build a 22-point lead.
Green hit three-straight three-pointers to bring UTRGV within 53-40, and then another Green three made it 66-54 with 10:36 to go, but TAMUCC scored 24 of the next 36 points to pull away.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Iowa.
The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. when these two teams play again in Corpus Christi.
