EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team completed a sweep of the Battle on the Border tournament by picking up another win in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, 55-46 over Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) on Tuesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
UTRGV (8-6) regains the lead in the showdown standings, 17-15 over TAMUCC (4-7).
 
Senior Shawnte' Goff earned Tournament MVP honors after averaging 23.0 points on .405 (15-for-37) shooting, plus .733 (11-of-15) from the line, with 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
 
Sophomore Bernesha Peters also earned All-Tournament Team honors after averaging 16.5 points on .522 (12-for-23) shooting, including .538 (7-of-13) from behind the arc, with 2.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
 
In this game, Goff led UTRGV with 19 points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Idil Türk scored 12 points while hitting a career-high tying four three-pointers. Peters scored 11 points with two steals.
 
Camesha Davis led TAMUCC with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
 
UTRGV trailed 14-11 after a Brittany Mbamalu three with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter. That's when UTRGV's offense ignited, as Goff and Peters hit layups 18 seconds apart to spark a 20-7 run that put UTRGV up 29-21 early in the third quarter.
 
TAMUCC responded by scoring the next nine points, taking the lead on a Camesha Davis free throw, but a Peters layup put UTRGV back on top 31-30.
 
An Emma Young layup put TAMUCC back on top at the end of the third, but Goff opened the fourth with a three and a layup, and then Türk hit back-to-back threes as part of a 13-0 run to give UTRGV the lead for good.
 
UTRGV is back in action on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. when it hosts St. Thomas in a game that will be televised regionally on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. Doors open at 6.
 
The next events of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, are on Feb. 1 when the men's and women's tennis teams face off at UTRGV.
