EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team recorded its program record fifth-straight shutout to beat Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) 2-0 on Sunday in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, at Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
With the win, UTRGV (5-1-1) completes the season sweep of TAMUCC (0-7-0) while giving UTRGV an 8-5 lead in in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
UTRGV has now held its opponents off the board for a program record 470 consecutive minutes.
Freshman
Kinga Szemik (3-0-0) recorded her third shutout in as many matches by making three saves.
Sophomore Weslaco alum
Elvia Valdez stole the ball in the box and shot low to score her first-career goal and put UTRGV up 1-0 at 75:22.
Just over one minute later, junior
Andreya Barrera scored her fourth goal of the season off a long pass from junior
Hanna Spets that set up a breakaway.
Kendall Moody (0-1-0) made seven saves in the second half for TAMUCC after
Tatum Hightower made one save in the first half.
UTRGV outshot TAMUCC 23-to-7, including 10-to-4 on goal.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it visits UTEP.
The next events in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, are men's and women's cross country at TAMUCC on Friday at 6:15 p.m. Each event is worth two points.
