CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's cross country team finished in third place among Division I schools at the Islander Splash on Friday at Jim Dugan Stadium.
The women's team finished with 72 points among Division I schools as the finished behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State.
The Islanders earned four points in the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union after the women's team finished behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the standings and the men's team not able to post a team score with four runners. The Islanders now lead the showdown 9 to 8.
Junior
Roxanna Vidaurri led the women's team with an 11
th place finish among Division I runners as she crossed the finish line with a time of 21:05. Freshman
Alexandria Canchola posted a 13
th place finish with a time of 22:20 while sophomore
Michelle Flores finished in 15
th place with a time of 23:55. Freshman
Mailen Navarro finished in 16
th with a time of 24:03 and Monica Yanez finished in 17
th with a time of 25:50.
On the men's side, sophomore
Mathew Peynado finished in fourth place among Division I runners after finishing the 8,000-meter race with a time of 26:40.4. Sophomore
Mark Trejo finished in eighth place with a time of 27:41.3 while sophomore
Isaac Arevalo finished in 10
th place with a time of 28:25.5. Freshman
Jayven Cordova rounded out the men's team with a 12
th place finish after finishing with a time of 30:17.7
UTRGV cross country will be back in action on October 1 when they travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Chili Pepper Festival.
The next event in the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union will be a volleyball match on October 11 at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
