EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team fell 1-6 in their home opener to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-0) opened doubles with a win on court three but UTRGV (1-5) answered back with an exciting 7-6 victory on court two as the team of Koby Jansen and Mateo Schmit beat Cagaty Soke and Paul Cook.
 
On court one, Elliot Johnstone and Clément Sarradin battled back to tie the doubles forcing a tiebreaker before falling 6-7 to Kevin Bettendroffer and William Mottet.
 
In singles, Texas A&M-Corpus Christ won on courts three, two and one to clinch the match but junior Koby Jansen got UTRGV on the board with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Gonzalo Achondo on court four.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the final two courts to put the match away.
 
With the loss, both teams are now tied at 17 points apiece in the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. With the women's match still left to play on the day, the next event will be when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi host's a golf tournament from February 27-28.
 
UTRGV will have some time off before they hit the road to face St. Edward's University in Austin on February 11.
