CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team closed out their season series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 0-7 loss on Tuesday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-4) started the match off by taking the doubles point but it was UTRGV's team of Yehonatan Kaufman and Clemen Sarradin who pulled out the 7-5 victory over Maximilian Ilic and Mitchell Cook on court two.  
 
In singles, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the first four matches in straight sets to clinch the win. UTRGV (2-14) did win a set on two of their matches as junior Elliot Johnstone and freshman Mateo Schmit sent their matches to three sets.
 
Johnstone opened his match with Cagatay Soke with a 6-2 victory in the first set before falling 7-5 in the second, which forced a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Johnstone and Soke went back and forth before Johnstone fell 9-11.
 
In the last match on the court, Mateo Schmit opened with a 7-5 win in the first set against Lukas Buth. After falling in the second set, Schmit went toe-to-toe with Buth in the tiebreaker before falling 16-18 to close out the match.
 
With the loss UTRGV now trails Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 27-19 in the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on March 15 when they hit the road to face the University of South Carolina Upstate at 2 p.m.
