CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team closed out their regular season matchup with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with a 2-5 loss on Tuesday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (1-11) got off to the early lead as they picked up the doubles point. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-1) won the doubles match on court three but it was the team of Dominique Esparza and Anastasia Belyaeva defeated Louise Trigona and Marina Vicens Miguel 6-4 on court two.
 
It all came down to court one where Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 win over Jelena Dzinic and Judit Vives.
 
In singles, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the first five matches to clinch the win but Ibarra wasn't going home empty handed. Ibarra picked up a 6-2, 7-5 over Maria Maldonado on court four for her fourth straight singles win.
 
With the UTRGV loss, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has clinched the win in the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. With the score at 29-19 in favor of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, there are just nine points left in the showdown. The next event in the showdown will be a baseball game on Friday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on March 17 when they head to Las Cruces, New Mexico for the first WAC cluster of the season to face Chicago State.
