Baseball Blows Out Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Win Final Showdown of 2016-17

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team won the finale of the inaugural South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, 13-3 in seven innings over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
Up 8-3 entering the seventh, UTRGV (25-23) scored on a bases loaded walk by senior Victor Garcia Jr. and an RBI-single by freshman Tyler Torres before sophomore Conrad McMahon hit a walk-off three-run double.
 
McMahon finished a career-high tying 3-for-5 with a career-high tying three RBI and two runs scored. Torres finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Three other UTRGV players had multi-hit games, led by sophomore Anthony Gomez, who went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Senior Jose Garcia went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored while senior Joseph Collazo finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and one run scored.
 
After being held off the board in the first, UTRGV scored in each of the final six innings. In the second, Victor Garcia Jr. had an RBI-groundout. In the third, Collazo came up with an RBI-double. In the fourth, junior Austin Siener stole two bases and scored on an errant throw.
 
The game was tied at three after four and a half innings, but in the bottom of the fifth, Collazo hit an RBI-single to knock out Chris Glover (0-2) and then Jose Garcia greeted Korey Rasure with a first pitch home run to make it 6-3.
 
Gomez hit a two-run double in the sixth to make it 8-3.
 
That made a winner of junior Harlingen South alum Zach Martinez (3-1), who pitched 1.1 innings of hitless relief.
 
Corpus Christi (15-30) got on the board for the first time in the third on a bunt-single by Cullen Jozwiak.

Corpus Christi tied the game in the fifth on an RBI-single by Dalton Stark and a bases loaded walk by Cam Boudreaux.
 
UTRGV resumes Western Athletic Conference play when it opens up a three-game series against Northern Colorado on May 12 at 7 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports channel 323. Gates open at 6.
