CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team played Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a scoreless double overtime tie during the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Sunday at Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
This is the first tie in showdown history. UTRGV (3-2-2) and Corpus Christi (2-2-1) remain tied in the showdown standings with each team now having 4.5 points.
UTRGV applied plenty of offensive pressure, as nine of its 11 shots went on goal. Juniors
Diandra Aliaga and
Kelzy Jepsen and freshman
Gina Steiner each attempted two shots on goal while seniors
Andreya Barrera and
Marcela Ramirez and junior
Tuva Rolstad Nilsen each attempted one.
UTRGV also attempted eight corner kicks.
Defensively, UTRGV held Corpus Christi to eight shots, including five on net.
Senior Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (2-1-1) made a season-high five saves for her second shutout of the season and eighth of her career.
Jordan Wainwright (1-0-1) made nine saves for Corpus Christi.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. at Texas in a game that will be televised live on Longhorn Network.
The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the volleyball teams face-off at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
