EDINBURG – Shortly after unveiling the 2016 Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament banners, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team took the court to defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) during the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Union, on Wednesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a record crowd of 1,529.

UTRGV (4-7) now leads Corpus Christi (3-8) 7.5-4.5 in the showdown standings.

This was UTRGV's first sweep of Corpus Christi since Oct. 9, 2007, a span of 19 matches.

Junior Ragni Steen Knudsen posted her second double-double of the season with 11 kills, 11 digs and two aces. Senior Bojana Mitrovic recorded 11 kills on .303 hitting with nine digs. Freshman Debora Nazario recorded her first double-double with 31 assists and a career-high 14 digs.

Mallory Moran led Corpus Christi with 12 kills and eight digs.

UTRGV and Corpus Christi traded points for the first 12 serves of the match, but with the score tied at six, Corpus Christi scored three-straight points to take its largest lead of the set. That's when the UTRGV offense ignited, as a kills by Knudsen and Mitrovic and two by sophomore Barbara Silva allowed UTRGV to go on a 12-2 run to take an 18-11 lead and run away with the set.

Corpus Christi jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before a trio of Mitrovic kills allowed UTRGV to go on a 12-4 run to take a 13-8 lead. Corpus Christi came back to tie the set at 19, but UTRGV took advantage of four errors and two Knudsen kills to end the set.

The third set was tight early, as UTRGV led 10-9 before an 8-3 run put UTRGV up 18-12.  UTRGV's lead was cut to five at 22-17 when Knudsen came up with a kill and an ace. Two serves later, a Mitrovic kill ended the match.

UTRGV opens up the UTRGV Tournament on Friday at 7 p.m. against Incarnate Word at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
