PATTERSON, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's golf team leads the field by eight strokes with a nine over 585 after completing two rounds on Monday at the Atchafalaya at Idlewind during the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate, hosted by Nicholls State.
UTRGV will look to win its 13
th tournament championship and first since the 2012 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships when the third round gets underway with a shotgun start on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
UTRGV was tied for third out of 10 teams with a 297 at the end of the first round, four strokes behind Jacksonville State. Junior
Alvaro Hernandez shot a second round 68, including four of UTRGV's 10 birdies in the round, to key a team score of 288, 12 strokes better than the next best team, Jackson State, which shot a 300 and sits in second with a score of 593.
The team score of 288 is tied for the 27
th best round in program history.
Hernandez currently ranks first among 56 individuals with a score of 141, three under par. His second round 68 is tied for the 17
th best individual round in program history. Hernandez looks to become the 19
th individual medalist in program history and first since
Nicolas Platret won the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Championship.
Freshman
Tennoshin Ogawa is tied for second with a 146 after shooting a first round 71, one under par and five strokes back of Hernandez. If Ogawa finishes second, he will be the 16
th player to record a second place finish in program history.
Hernandez and Ogawa are looking to become the fourth pair of UTRGV teammates to claim the top two spots in a tournament and the first since the spring of 2009, when
Armen Kirakossian finished first and
Shane Pearce finished second at the Schreiner Spring Shootout.
Junior
Pedro Lamadrid and sophomore
Luca Portelli are currently tied for 10
th with scores of 149, five over par. Portelli shot an even 72 in the second round while Lamadrid was one over at 73.
Senior
Ali Khazanbeik is tied for 34
th with a score of 159.
