Final Results
EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's and women's track and field teams combined to win 15 events in its dual meet against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Juniors
Yariel Matute,
Paul May, and
Idatonye Cheetham-West led UTRGV with three wins each in their respective events.
Matute teamed up with senior
Cristian Reyna, freshman Alex Lara, and sophomore Carlos Serna Hernandez in the men's 4x100-meter relay to win the event with a time of 42.11 seconds, which ranks second fastest in program history.
Matute then added a win in the men's 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 47.48 seconds and then he closed out his day with a win in the men's 200-meter dash after posting a new personal best time of 21.43 seconds, which is tied for fourth fastest in program history.
May got the day started with a win in the shot put after hitting a mark of 16.78 meters. He followed with a win in the men's discus after hitting a mark of 48.20 meters and then he closed out his day with a win in the men's hammer throw after a personal best mark of 55.48 meters, which ranks fifth furthest in program history.
Cheetham-West led the women's team with three victories on the day as she opened with a win the long jump after posting a leap of 6.04 meters, which ranks second best in program history. She then went on the track to win the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 11.76 seconds, which ranks second fastest in program history. Cheetham-West then won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.86 seconds, which resets her own program record.
Sophomore Ricardo Mendoza won the men's 1,500-meter run after crossing the finish line with a time of 3:57.48 while freshman Abraham Chirchir finished in second with a time of 4:00.13.
Junior
Felicia Wills finished in the top spot in the women's 400-meter hurdles after posting a time of 1:02.53 while sophomore Carlos Serna-Hernandez won the men's 400-meter hurdles after crossing the finish line with a time of 55.30 seconds while junior
Dimitris Levantinos finished in second with a time of 56.31 seconds.
Freshman Mauricio Campos won the men's high jump after clearing a height of 2.01 meters while junior
Anthony Magallon finished in second after also clearing 2.01 meters but in more attempts. Magallon then followed with a win in the men's long jump after a leap of 6.79 meters
Junior
Dai'ja Coleman won the women's triple jump after a leap of 11.82 meters while Campos also added a second-place finish on the men's side with a leap of 12.68 meters.
The men's team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 81-59 to pick up two points in the showdown while the women's team lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 62-88 giving two points back to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The dual meet wraps up the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi winning 27.5 points to 22.5 points.
UTRGV will be back in action on April 13 when it heads to San Antonio to compete in the UIW Invitational.
