Victor Garcia Jr. hit his first collegiate home run, a grand slam, to power a seven run eighth as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team came from behind to beat the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks 8-7 in game three of the JSU Tournament on Saturday at Robert Braddy Field.
The Broncs (1-2) trailed 6-1 entering the top of the eighth as Skyhawks (1-1) starter
Alex Martin struck out 10 while scattering three hits and one walk in seven innings.
Cole Schaenzer (0-1) came on in relief and issued a seven-pitch walk to freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo before plunking freshman
Isaac Gonzalez.
Schaenzer threw four of his next five pitches out of the zone to walk senior
Jesus Garcia and load the bases before departing in favor of
Dalton Potts.
Sophomore
Edgar Cordon hit a grounder to short, but
Matt Hirsch bobbled it, keeping the bases loaded as a run scored. One out later, Victor Garcia unloaded on a pitch and drove it over the right field wall to tie the game.
The Broncs then reloaded the bases on two walks and a single. Loredo then reached on an error that allowed two runs to score to put the Broncs up 8-6.
That made a winner of sophomore Nikki Rowe alum
Andrew Padron (1-0), who gave up two runs on three hits while striking out two in 2.2 innings of relief.
After a
Jake Deason home run off of junior Roma alum
Isaac Martinez made it a one-run game in the eighth, freshman
Robert Quinonez recorded the final five outs, striking out three, for his first save.
Junior
Spencer Greer started for the Broncs, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three in 4.1 innings.
The Broncs close out the tournament against Jackson State at approximately 6 p.m.
