SAN ANTONIO – Graduate student Paul May broke the program record in the shot put by nearly a third of a meter to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams during day two of the Roadrunner Invitational on Friday at Park West Athletics Complex.
 
May won the shot put with a throw of 18.09 meters, besting the program record he set earlier this year of 17.80 meters. The previous record, which also belonged to May, was 17.51 meters, set in 2018. Prior to May's arrival, the program record was 16.77 meters, set by J.C. Crosby in 2005.
 
Freshman Michael Campbell finished second in the shot put with a throw of 16.09 meters. Graduate student PSJA Memorial alum Michael Gonzalez placed fifth with a season-best throw of 15.91 meters.
 
May followed up his big shot put with the third-best hammer throw in program history, placing fifth with a throw of 57.95 meters. Senior Christian Hall-Gardner finished right behind May, placing sixth with a throw of 55.99 meters, the eighth-best in program history.
 
On the women's side, junior Alexandrea Hurst finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.18 meters, the 10^th-best in program history. Graduate student Desirea Buerge placed fourth with a mark of 14.53 meters.
 
Freshman Samantha Gonzalez recorded the eighth-best 3,000-meter steeplechase in program history, placing third with a time of 11:55.33.

Graduate student Aviana Goode had a big heptathlon, competing in two of the final three events and six out of seven overall to earn 3,946 points, the eighth-most in program history.
 
Action concludes Saturday, with field events getting underway at 11 a.m. with the pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump and discus. Track events start at 2 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relays.
