Dominique Currid

Dominique Currid, a Houston Dynamo South Texas Academy Assistant Club Director, Olympic Development Program (ODP) coach and member of the coaching education staff for the South Texas Youth Soccer Association (STYS), is in his second season as a volunteer assistant coach.

A native of Donegal, Ireland, Currid began his career with storied Irish amateur club, Keadue Rovers F.C. (founded in 1896). Moving up through the ranks, he became the youngest player in club history to break into the first team, playing in the Third Division/Tier of Irish soccer. This earned him an invitation to play for other Irish Junior Clubs, including Fanad United F.C., a highly successful Ulster Senior League (USL) team.

He was thus identified to play for the Donegal Youths and Ulster Schools select teams, the selection pool for the Irish National Team. Training under Irish national goalkeeper coach Declan McIntyre led the Currid representing Ulster/Ireland in the Wales International Super Cup.

This impressive rise earned Currid a preseason call up to then, Premier League of Ireland side Finn Harps F.C. After a successful summer trial period, he was asked to sign with the club in August 2001. Additionally, it was at this time that he started his coaching career, earning his first coaching badge under the tutelage of Ireland and Celtic F.C. great, Packie Bonner.

Upon moving to the United States more than 13 years ago, Currid continued developing his professional coaching career with the Celtic Soccer Club in Harlingen. Working with all levels of youth players, he coached various boys and girls Celtic teams to multiple state championships in both D-1 and Super-2 leagues playing in the STYSA.

Even with the success found in coaching, his playing days were still not complete, as he found his way back into playing for various leagues. This included one season participating in the top tier of youth soccer, at the time, The Snickers Cup, under the leadership of current UTRGV men’s soccer volunteer assistant coach Gary Hamilton.

In 2004, Currid was a pioneering player of the very first PDL team in the Rio Grande Valley, the RGV Coyotes. He subsequently went on to assist with the selection and training of a later PDL franchise, The Rio Grandes, successor to the Rio Grande Valley Bravos.

Since moving to the RGV, Currid has coached multiple athletes who have found their way into both the college and professional game.

Currid is a proud Army veteran, and resides in Edinburg with his wife Jessica, and their three dogs, Samson, Scruffy and Ty.
