EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader against Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) 7-1 on Monday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium during the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
UTRGV (10-6) scored its run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by senior
Jose Garcia.
TAMUCC (4-11) got all the runs it needed against senior
Andrew Garcia (2-1) in the first, as with the bases loaded and two outs,
Nkosi Djehuti-Mes hit a blooper into centerfield to drive-in two runs.
TAMUCC added a run in the second on an infield-single by
Cullen Jozwiak.
Garcia settled down to pitch 7.2 innings, striking out two while allowing nine hits and three walks.
The other run against Garcia came in the eighth on a two-out single by
Dalton Stark.
TAMUCC added three runs in the ninth on an RBI-double by
Itchy Burts and a two-run single by Jozwiak, who finished 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
Brett Burner also reached four times, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a triple and two runs scored.
UTRGV threatened a few times against
Chris Cooper (1-2), putting two on with nobody out in the fourth and fifth innings. Each time there was a double play to help TAMUCC escape the inning.
UTRGV also put a runner in scoring position with two outs in the sixth before a pop-out ended the inning.
Cooper went seven innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four.
Chad Romere pitched two scoreless innings for his first save.
UTRGV and TAMUCC wrap up this three-game series with game two of the doubleheader at approximately 6:45 p.m.
