EDINBURG - Boasting the best record and hottest statistics in the Sun Belt Conference, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs hope to keep up their soccer momentum on the road.
They risk a 6-1 record by visiting St. Mary's University at 4 p.m. Wednesday, then going to Schreiner College in Kerrville at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Eloy Moran has coached the Broncs to a fast 6-1 getaway. Their .857 percentage leads second-place South Alabama by 157 percentage points. USA stands 3-1-1.
The other four soccer-playing members of the Sun Belt all are .500 or under. Western Kentucky stands 3-3, Jacksonville 3-3-1, Central Florida 1-3 and Arkansas-Little Rock 0-3.
However, these standings don't matter much in conference race, because there is no Sun Belt schedule. All six teams qualify for the Conference Championship Tournament in Mobile, Ala., Nov. 8-10.
Jesus Tavarez of UT Pan American leads the conference in scoring with 12 points (five goals, two assists) in seven games.
Chris Hutchinson of Western Kentucky ranks second with five goals and one assist for 11 points.
Ronny Cabrera with seven points and
Mohsen Husain with six give the Broncs the No. 3 and 4 men among the top 10.
Goalie
Fredy Sanguinetti of the Broncs leads the league in goalkeeping, both with five shutouts and an average of just 0.43 goals allowed. Zach Com of Jacksonville ranks second at 0.75. Every other goalie is allowing at least one goal per game.
South Alabama figures to provide though competition for the Broncs in Mobile. USA has beaten Belhaven, 2-1 in overtime, and won on the road at major universities, 2-1 at George Mason and 1-0 at Memphis State. USA tied American University, 1-1, and lost only at Coastal Carolina, 3-0.
