Sports medicine represents an integrated team of physicians and other allied medical professionals who together coordinate and manage the overall health and welfare of student-athletes. Many times, athletic trainers are thought of as someone who provides fitness and strength training for athletes. However, the athletic trainer is a skilled credentialed medical professional who is at the forefront of the care provided by the sports medicine team.
The sports medicine staff at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley works with all 16 NCAA Division I teams to provide health care and medical support to all UTRGV student-athletes. This includes the supervision of team’s practices and competitions, the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, daily maintenance of the athletic training room, and coordination of referrals to outside medical professionals as needed.
The mission of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Sports Medicine Staff is multi- faceted. First and foremost, to provide medical care to all UTRGV student-athletes regardless of sport, gender, race, or ability level. Other services focus on education and counseling regarding health and nutrition, mental health issues, and preventative “body” maintenance. In addition, the sports medicine staff oversees the Athletic Training Internship Program, which prepares interested young students for the profession of athletic training.
