The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team handed rivals Texas A&M - Corpus Christi a straight set loss (30-22, 30-24, 31-29) on Tuesday (Oct. 12) in their first home contest since Sept. 4th.
Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) notched her seventh double-double (kills-digs) of the season after collecting a match-high 16 kills along with 12 digs. On the season, Bravo leads the team with 182 kills and ranks second with 171 digs.
Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) continued her strong season as the UTPA libero collected her ninth 20-plus digs performance after finishing with a match-high 20 digs. She entered the contest ranked fifth in the nation in digs per game with a 5.89 average. The Lady Broncs' sophomore also came up with two straight service aces towards the end of the third game that gave UTPA a 30-29 advantage over the Islanders.
Junior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) collected her second consecutive double-digit kills match as she finished with 11 kills, and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) quarterbacked the UTPA offense, dishing out a match-high 36 assists while also collecting 18 digs.
Ashley McDonald led Texas A&M - Corpus Christi with 12 kills. Four Islander players recorded 10 or more digs in the contest with Kati Broom leading the way with 17.
The Lady Broncs will return to the UTPA Fieldhouse on Friday (Oct. 15) for a match against Northern Colorado. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. with UTPA's Annual Midnight Madness to begin afterwards.
