There's an old cliché about `The nail in the coffin.'

Well - The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team had Utah Valley State locked inside the coffin, lid on top and nails in hand, but was unable to find the hammer on Saturday (Oct. 16) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Lady Broncs breezed through the first two games and had complete control of the game, but after the 10-minute intermission, the Wolverines scratched and clawed their way to winning the final three games for the victory (18-30, 27-30, 30-24, 30-27, 15-12).

With the victory, Utah Valley State improved to 6-9 while the Lady Broncs dropped to 7-11 after dropping their second straight match.

Deise Borghetti put on an offensive display as she recorded 30 of the Wolverines' 69 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .410 for the match. She also racked up 15 digs to go along with two blocks. Lacee Koelliker quarterbacked the UVSC offense as she dished out a team-high 40 assists while also notching 18 digs.

The Lady Broncs possessed leads in every game, but were unable to capitalize on them, especially in the fifth and final game where UTPA held an 8-2 advantage. Led by Borghetti, who had seven kills in the final game, the Wolverines were able to rally off a 9-2 stretch and cruised to a 15-12 win.

Sophomore Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) had a career-night as the UTPA outside hitter finished with 19 kills in 52 chances, which were both personal bests. She also added seven digs and two block assists.

Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) picked up her third straight and 10th overall double-double (kills-digs) as she recorded 16 kills and 21 digs. Her digs performance was also a career-best for the Las Vegas, NV, native.

Sophomore Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) dished out a match-high 58 kills, which were the second highest total in her career. She also added a career-high 23 digs to go along with five kills. Juniors Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) and Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) were both cogs in the middle as the duo finished with 16 and 15 kills, respectively.

Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) collected 16 digs for the Lady Broncs, who held a 100-87 advantage in the category, while Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) racked up 14 of her own and Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos H.S.) added 11 digs.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 19) against Texas A&M - Kingsville at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
