Some critics believe that the first 10 minutes of a movie are the most important because it not only possesses the opportunity to captivate the audience from the beginning, but can also determine whether it will be a blockbuster or bust.

If a movie critic was watching the University of Texas-Pan American (8-11) volleyball team on Tuesday (Oct. 19) night, he would have surely given the Lady Broncs two thumbs up with a dominating performance right from the start over Texas A&M - Kingsville (8-17) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

"Anytime we can get a three-game win, I'm extremely happy," said head coach Dave Thorn. "We were really focused tonight on defense, and it was a good win for us."

The Lady Broncs jumped on the Javalinas right from the get-go, and accumulated a 17-1 lead in the first game before cruising to a 30-11 victory. UTPA held a 19-5 advantage in kills, including finishing with a .400 hitting percentage in that first game.

Game two proved to be a showdown within the first couple of points with Texas A&M - Kingsville upping their play and hanging with the Lady Broncs point-for-point. With the score tied at 11-11, the Lady Broncs went on to outscore their opponents, 17-6, for the remainder of the game for a 30-17 victory.

UTPA has had a problem finishing off opponents after its won the first two games of a match, but the Lady Broncs broke that jinx when they cruised easily in the final game, 30-14. UTPA had 14 kills compared to the Javalinas' five and held their opponents to a -.220 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) once again led the Lady Broncs offensively as she recorded her fourth consecutive double-double (kills-digs) with a 13-kill, 16-dig performance. She finished the match with a hitting percentage of .440, committing only two errors in 25 total chances. It was her 11th double-double of the season.

"Heather has really transitioned well from her freshman year into her sophomore season. She led us again in kills and digs, and she continues to get better with every match," Thorn added.

Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) finished with 11 kills for the Lady Broncs, who possessed a 45 to 19 advantage in that category over the Javalinas. She also notched two service aces in the match.

Sophomore Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) was the quarterback for the UTPA offense as she dished out a match-high 32 assists along with finishing with a hitting percentage of .625 with five kills in nine chances.

Sophomore Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.), who was recently named Independent Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, racked up 12 digs while Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) collected seven kills along with 11 digs.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Thursday (Oct. 21) against UTEP on the road.
