The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team became the eighth straight victim to suffer at the hands of a red-hot New Mexico State squad, who cruised to a three-set victory (30-18, 30-167, 30-25) over the Lady Broncs, on Friday (Oct. 22) at the Pan American Center.
The Aggies, who improved to 19-2, jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first set before doubling up the Lady Broncs, who fell to 8-13, at 24-12 en route to an easy first set victory.
In the second frame, New Mexico State continued to play ahead of UTPA as the Aggies rolled to a 12-3 lead, which was the direct result of seven Lady Bronc errors during that stretch. In the victory, New Mexico State held UTPA to a -.024 hitting percentage compared to .273 for the winners.
The third and final set saw the Lady Broncs make a dramatic comeback from their previous two downfalls and tied the Aggies at 24-24 before NMSU junior Sarah Silagy registered four of her 11 kills to close out the frame. The Aggies captured the final game with a 30-25 victory.
Silagy led the Aggies with 11 kills coming off the bench while Alice Bordon finished with nine kills in 13 attempts for a .692 hitting percentage. Stevi Adams recorded a double-double (kills-digs) with a 10-kill, 11-dig performance. NMSU setter Jackie Choi dished out 39 assists along with seven digs and four kills in five attempts.
UTPA sophomore Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) recorded another milestone on Friday night as she racked up 15 digs, which allowed her to pass Marie Velaquez (1,024 digs) for second on the all-time digs' category. For her career, Marcengo has collected 1,035 career digs and needs 352 digs to pass Jaclyn Muszynski for the all-time lead.
Junior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) finished with a match-high 12 kills, and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) notched 26 assists in a losing effort for UTPA.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 27) against Texas - San Antonio at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
