Lady Broncs Fall to Texas State in Straight Sets

The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team went toe-to-toe with one of the top volleyball teams in the Southland Conference on Monday (Oct. 25), but fell ever so slightly in its efforts to pull an upset as the Lady Broncs were downed by Texas State in straight sets (30-27, 30-20, 30-28).

The Bobcats were led by reigning Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week award recipient Stephanie Torregrosa, who finished with a match-high 12 digs along with 15 digs. She was the only player to record double-digit kills for Texas State, who held a 43-38 advantage in that category.

UTPA helped the Bobcats in a first-game victory after recording 11 errors in 51 chances compared to TSU's five in 44 attempts. Texas State was able to pull a close win out of its hat with a 30-27 triumph.

In the second set, the Bobcats and Lady Broncs once again played close, until the very end when Texas State was able to pull away for the win. Texas State held UTPA to a hitting percentage of .024 while striking .237 in their winning efforts.

The third and decisive frame once again so a close match-up until the very end, but the Bobcats were able to avoid a fourth-game by capturing a 30-28 victory.

Texas State used the duo of Jessica Grisham and Krystal Kolkhorst, who dished out 22 and 14 assists respectively, to quarterback the offense. Kristy Jones also added a match-high 16 digs.

The Lady Broncs were led offensively by Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.), who recorded 12 kills, along with Cathi Netemeyer's (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa) 10 kills, 13 digs and three service aces. Jen Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin H.S.) handed out 18 assists while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) added 15 of her own.

Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) recorded 10 digs and extended her streak to 18 consecutive matches in which the UTPA sophomore has collected 10 or more digs.

With the victory, Texas State improved to 19-4 (12-2 in Southland Conference action) while UTPA dropped to 8-14.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 27) against Texas - San Antonio at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
