The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team was handed a five-game setback (30-23, 18-30, 30-18, 30-32, 15-4) against Texas - San Antonio on Wednesday (Oct. 27) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
With the win, UTSA improves its record to 13-11 while the Lady Broncs dropped to 8-15.
In the first game, the Roadrunners and Lady Broncs were dead-locked at a 10-10 tie before UTSA quickly went on a 7-0 run and never looked back from there. The Lady Broncs came back to capture game two with a 30-18 before falling in the third set by the same score.
The fourth set was the most impressive of the evening as both teams battled back and were in a dead heat throughout the game. In the end, UTPA was able to come out on top with an emotional 32-30 victory.
The Roadrunners finished off the Lady Broncs in grand fashion, jumping out to an 11-1 lead in the final set before cruising to the 15-4 victory.
Connie Picard put together a fantastic evening as she finished with 18 kills in 32 chances, recording a .531 hitting percentage. Meagan Daniel recorded a double-double (kills-digs) with 17 kills and 14 digs.
DeeDee Strickland had a match-high 48 kills while also adding 13 digs. Brittany Hildebrand also added a double-double with an 11-kill, 15-dig performance.
Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa) was the Lady Broncs' top offensive player as she recorded 17 kills in 35 attempts for a .457 hitting percentage while also adding 13 digs. Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) finished with 10 kills and 11 digs in a losing effort.
UTPA sophomore Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.), who was named Independent Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season, finished with a match-high 42 digs, which was the second highest single-game mark. It was her 19th consecutive match with double-digit digs along with her second career match with 40 or more digs.
Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) recorded a double-double with 42 assists and 16 digs while Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) also aided the Lady Broncs with 13 digs.
UTPA will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 30) against Texas A&M - International with match time set for 4:00 p.m.
