UTPA Volleyball Takes Straight Set Victory Over TAMIU

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team handed Texas A&M - International University its fifth loss of the season in straight sets (30-15, 30-20, 30-22) on Saturday (Oct. 30) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) collected a match-high 18 kills and added 14 digs to help seal the victory for the Lady Broncs. Bravo currently leads UTPA with 274 kills on the season and ranks second in digs with 284. Bravo also served up back-to-back aces in game three to push the Lady Broncs ahead before cruising to victory.

Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) played another strong match at the libero position, recording a match-high 19 digs, taking her to 456 digs on the season. The Lady Broncs sophomore also recorded four aces during the match, ranking her second on the team in service aces with 18.

Senior Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa) and junior Stephanie Reed ( Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) both had solid performances for the Lady Broncs. Reed recorded 15 kills in 27 attempts while Netemeyer added 14 kills. Karen Lyons quarterbacked the UTPA offense, dishing out a game high 48 assists, while also collecting four kills and nine digs.

Katherine Taju was the only Dustdevil to record a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Desiree Arredondo collected a team-high 9 assists and 13 digs. TAMIU is now 20-5 on the season while the Lady Broncs move to 9-15.

The Lady Broncs return to action on the road playing Texas Southern (Nov. 1) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (Nov.2).
