The University of Texas-Pan American (6-9) women's volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (13-8) in five games (30-25, 24-30, 30-22, 26-30, 15-13) on Wednesday (Oct. 6).
It was a big night for the UTPA middle blockers as Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) and Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) proved to be stars on both offense and defense for the Lady Broncs. Redd finished with a team-high 18 kills and tied a season-best with six blocks while Holthe notched 10 kills along with eight blocks. The duo leads the squad with 36 total blocks on the season. For the match, the Lady Broncs held a 14.0 to 4.0 advantage in blocks.
Sophomore Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) continued her strong play on the outside as she nearly missed out on her first double-double (kills-digs) of the season, collecting 13 kills along with nine digs. Sophomore Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) quarterbacked the UTPA offense as the McAllen, TX, native dished out a season-high 47 digs. It was the fourth time in Lyons' career that she has collected 40 or more assists in a match. She also added 11 digs in a winning cause.
UTPA libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) picked up her eighth 20-plus dig performance as the sophomore finished with a match-high 22 digs. She came into the contest ranked sixth in the nation in digs per game with a 6.05 average.
Anna Machado led the Islanders with 22 kills along with 19 digs in a losing effort. Fernanda Bastos racked up a match-high 55 assists and 14 digs while Lauren Smith and Alexis Berger collected 15 and 11 kills, respectively.
The Lady Broncs will be back in the UTPA Fieldhouse for the first time since Sept. 4th as UTPA will once again meet Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
