Box Score

The term "Catch-22 situation" is commonly referred to a no-win situation.

That's where the Texas Southern women's volleyball team comes into play because for the 22nd consecutive time, the Lady Tigers were in a no-win situation against The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball squad.

The Lady Broncs (10-15) captured their second straight victory with a three-set (30-16, 30-26, 30-25) triumph over Texas Southern on Monday (Nov. 1) in Houston, TX.

In the first frame, UTPA stifled the Lady Tigers' offense as Texas Southern only managed to connect on three kills in 24 total attacks en route to finishing with a -.083 hitting percentage. It took a while for the Lady Broncs to get their offense rolling, notching 12 kills in 40 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .150, but UTPA still racked up a 30-16 win.

Texas Southern failed to take advantage of eight attacking errors at the hands of UTPA, allowing the Lady Broncs to slip by with a 30-26 victory. Despite the second-set errors, the Lady Broncs still held a 17-8 advantage in kills.

The final set was the nail in the coffin for the Lady Tigers. Texas Southern was held to under 10 kills for the third straight set as UTPA won 30-25 in that game.

Junior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) collected a match-high 13 kills, and sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) notched nine kills, six digs and four service aces. Sophomore Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) dished out a match-high 16 assists for the Lady Broncs.

Sophomore Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) continued her streak of 22 consecutive matches with at least double-digit digs, finishing with 10 digs for the match. She currently has 466 digs on the season, which is the second most single-season total in program history. The UTPA libero holds the record with 641 digs last season.

Lakenya Wrightsel led Texas Southern with five kills while Angela Santiago notched 14 assists along with four digs.

The Lady Broncs carried a 39-20 advantage in kills and 118-84 mark in total attacks. UTPA was served up 10 aces compared to the Lady Tigers' three.

UTPA will be back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 2) on the road at Texas A&M - Kingsville. The Lady Broncs will attempt to extend their winning streak to three matches, which would be the first time since they started the season 3-0. Match time for tomorrow night's contest will begin at 7:00 p.m.
