The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team suffered two losses in its first two matches at the LaQuinta Independent National Tournament hosted by Utah Valley State on Thursday (Nov. 11).
In their first match, the Lady Broncs were handed a four-game loss (30-23, 26-30, 24-30, 15-30) to North Dakota State. With the loss, the Lady Broncs fell to 10-18 on the season while the Bison improved to 11-18 overall.
The Lady Broncs took the first set 30-23 behind a strong offense attack, finishing the frame with a .360 hitting percentage compared to the Bison's .200 mark. After the first set, North Dakota State held the Lady Broncs' offense to under .200 for the remaining sets. The final set was the most dominating performance for the Bison as they recorded 20 kills in 34 attempts with one error for a hitting percentage of .559 where as the Lady Broncs only managed to record eight kills in that game.
Sophomore Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) finished the match with her second career double-double (kills-digs), collecting a team-high 16 kills and 12 digs. She was the only Lady Bronc to hit over .300, finishing with a .302 hitting percentage, for the match.
Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) collected her 24th consecutive match of 10 or more kills, notching 21 digs in the contest. It was her 14th match of 20 or more digs this season, and her second straight against North Dakota State.
Seniors Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) and Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa) each finished with a double-double, which marked the third time this season that the Lady Broncs had three players finish with double-digit kills and digs in a single-game this season. Cruz added 13 kills and 12 digs while Netemeyer recorded a 12-kill, 13-dig performance.
UTPA setter Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) dished out a match-high 51 assists and also racked up 10 digs. She also had five kills in 14 attempts.
Sheila Parrish finished with a match-high 22 kills for the Bison, and she also added 16 digs to the winners' cause. Emily Luensmann matched Lyons' performance with 51 assists of her own along with collecting 20 digs in the process. Kari Fagnan notched 21 digs for the Bison.
In the match, North Dakota State had two players surpass the .400 hitting percentage barrier with Sheri Swanson leading the way at .464, picking up 14 kills in 28 attacks with one error. Katie Haider added 11 kills in 25 attacks (.440).
The Lady Broncs came back later in the evening and suffered another four-game loss (23-30, 22-30, 32-30, 22-30) this time to Utah Valley State. Once again, the UTPA offense was unable to get back on track after its first game of the previous match, finishing with a hitting percentage of .087 against the Wolverines.
Netemeyer recorded her second consecutive double-double (kills-digs) and her third in five matches with a 15-kill, 16-dig performance. Lyons racked up 43 assists along with 19 digs in the match.
Marcengo notched her third 30-plus digs match this season, finishing with 30 digs against Utah Valley State. The Lady Broncs finished with 105 digs in the match with five players recording 10 or more in the contest. Cruz added nine kills and 24 digs while Carrigan added eight kills and 17 digs.
Deise Borghetti led all hitters with 16 kills while Jessica Endres contributed with 15 kills of her own. Maegan Hoty had a team-high 27 digs, and Lacee Koelliker dished out a match-high 58 assists.
The Lady Broncs will square off against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (10:00 a.m.) and South Dakota State (5:00 p.m.) on Friday (Nov. 12) on the second day of action at the LaQuinta Independent National Tournament.
