The University of Texas-Pan American dropped two matches at the LaQuinta Independent Championships to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and South Dakota State on Friday (Nov. 12) to extend its winless streak to five matches.
In the first match, the Lady Broncs fell into the same problems that they suffered in the previous match against North Dakota State. UTPA dominated the first game, recording a .450 team hitting percentage en route to a 30-17 victory. The Lady Broncs' defense stifled an Islander offense into committing eight errors in 30 attempts for a .100 hitting percentage.
After the first game, the Lady Broncs failed to hit over .125 for the remainder of the match and dropped the next three games for the loss. The Islanders responded after their first game mishaps by finishing with a .323 hitting performance in the second game followed by a .293 percentage in game three.
The Lady Broncs were led by Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa), who finished with a team-high 13 kills. UTPA collected 43 kills in the contest compared to 61 for TAMUCC. Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) dished out 25 assists in a losing cause. Kim Mora (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.), who replaced Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) in the lineup, had a team-high 14 digs while Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) put together an eight-kill, 11-dig performance for the Lady Broncs.
The Islanders were paced by 15 kills apiece from Anna Machado and Lauren Smith. TAMUCC setter Fernanda Bastos collected a double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs, and Kaley Fehrenkamp had a match-high 22 digs.
The second match of the evening for UTPA proved to be even more frustrating for the squad as UTPA collected 40 kills in 129 total attempts, but were hurt with 20 hitting errors. In the first game, South Dakota State and UTPA fought to the very end with the Jackrabbits coming out on top with 30-28 victory. They cruised easily in the next two frames, winning 30-18 and 30-19.
The Lady Broncs had three players record a team-high eight kills in Netemeyer, junior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) and sophomore Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.). Lyons dished out 33 assists to go along with 12 digs for the Lady Broncs. Cruz added 11 digs while Mora contributed with 10 digs of her own.
Minette Ridenour had a match-high 12 kills while Kim Bostrom notched 10 kills. The SDSU offense was led by a pair of setters in Kristie Klusaw and Stephanie Behm, who had 27 and 15 digs respectively. Sarah Simet had a match-high 27 digs for the Jackrabbits.
The Lady Broncs will conclude the LaQuinta Independent Championships on Saturday (Nov. 13) against Northern Colorado (10:00 a.m.) and IPFW (5:00 p.m.)
