Beaumont, Texas - Texas Pan American split its doubleheader with Lamar today. The Cardinals took the first game 16-1 while the Broncs came back to win the nightcap 8-6.

Game 1 belonged to Lamar. Trey Rinando shut down the Broncs as he allowed only three hits and struck out three batters in seven innings to pick up his first win of the year. Up 1-0 after three innings, the Cardinals broke it open in the 4th inning as they had nine hits and nine runs. Jordan Foster and John Allen had three hits each while Ryan Finan had a grand slam home run in the sixth inning. Matt Sisk (Sr./Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights HS) was 2-for-4 and avoided the shut out as he drove in Ben DiOrio (Sr./Canon City, Colo./Seward County CC) in the top of the ninth.

The Broncs struck early in Game 2. In the first inning, Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) doubled, Marco Garza (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS) got on with an error and Tony Ortiz (Jr./Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan HS) walked to load the bases. Following a strike out, Ryan Grimet (Fr./Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) walked to drive in Alamia. Sisk singled to right center to drive in Garza and Ortiz and put Grimet on third. Jarod Hickle (So./La Grange, Texas/La Grange HS) singled up the middle to score Grimet and make it 4-0.

Lamar scored one run in the bottom of the second but UTPA got that back in the next inning. With two outs and bases loaded, Ricky Broyles (Jr./Longview, Texas/Northeast Texas CC) singled down the right field line to drive in Hickle and Sisk to make it 6-1. The Cardinals scored one run in the 4th inning. In the 5th inning, Alamia singled to drive in Aaron Flowers (Jr./Rowlet, Texas/Northeast Texas CC). Later in the inning, Garza doubled to score Broyles and make it 8-2.

Lamar came back hard in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Ambort doubled to left center to score Adrian Cantu and Brett Winn. After a pop-up, Jeremy Gray homered to left field to make it 8-6. The Bronc bullpen kicked in giving up just two hits over the last four innings to preserve the win.

Alamia, Broyles, Garza and Sisk all had two hits each and Broyles, Garza and Sisk had two RBI's apiece. Juan Saenz (Jr./Mission, Texas/Mission HS) went four innings giving up two hits, one run and striking out five batters to move to 2-0 on the season. Broyles kept his save record perfect. This was the fourth game he pitched this season and it was his fourth save. He is now tied for 8th on the UTPA single-season list and tied for 10th on the career list.

The Broncs and Cardinals will do battle one more time, tomorrow in a single game starting at 2:00 p.m.
