Huntsville, Texas - Sam Houston State (2-2-1) took
advantage of UTPA (6-6)'s pitching in its 10-6 win over the Broncs. Texas-Pan
American gave up 10 hits, walked 10 batters and hit three.
After two innings, Sam Houston State led
2-1. In the third inning, the Bearkats got a run off of a single by Jonathon
Stone. Two batters later, Dom Garcia hit a three run bomb to make it
6-1. The Broncs attempted a comeback in the seventh inning, down 8-2. A walk by
Matt Sisk (Sr./Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights HS) and a single from
Ben DiOrio (Sr./Canon City, Colo./Seward County CC) started the inning
out. After an out, an error by the third baseman loaded the bases. Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) grounded out to second to
drive in Sisk. Ryan Grimet (Fr./Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS)
singled to drive in Aaron Flowers (Jr./Rowlett, Texas/Northeast Texas
CC). Tony Ortiz (Jr./Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan HS) doubled to drive in
Ricky Broyles (Jr./Longview, Texas/Northeast CC) to make it 8-5.
The Bearkats scored two runs in the bottom
to eighth to give themselves a little more cushion. In the ninth, an error by
the third baseman allowed Broyles to score but that was as close as the
Broncs could get.
For Sam Houston, Jeremy Aranda was
3-for-5 and Zach Adkisson gave up six hits and five runs to move to 1-1
on the season.
For Texas-Pan American, Sisk and
Oritz had two hits each with both of Ortiz's hits being extra base
hits. Alamia's single in the ninth inning kept his hitting streak alive
at nine consecutive games. He has also reached base safely in 22 consecutive
games.
"The tale of the tape today is that we
didn't pitch well." Said head coach Willie Gawlik. "We walked 13 batters,
hit three and gave up 10 hits. We were almost playing every inning with bases
loaded. I thought we made a nice comeback. The offense never quit and we got
some great defensive plays. Hard to battle back when the pitching isn't there.
We just need to come back tomorrow and throw strikes."
Texas-Pan American takes on Sam Houston tomorrow in a game
scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
