Edinburg, Texas - Texas-Pan American (12-10) came from
behind to defeat Texas-San Antonio (8-7) 6-4 tonight. This was the fifth win in
a row for the Broncs.
Texas-Pan American got on the scoreboard
first. In the second inning, Phillip Rodriguez (Fr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg
North HS) led off with a single. Tony Ortiz (Jr./Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan
HS) singled through the right side sending Rodriguez to third. As Otis Powers (So./Brownsville, Texas/Rivera HS) struck out, Ortiz took off
for second. The throw from the catcher sailed into center field allowing
Rodriguez to score. Matt Eichel (Jr./Grapevine, Texas/Grapevine HS)
grounded out to move Ortiz to third. A single by Aaron Flowers
(Jr./Rowlett, Texas/Northeast Texas CC) pushed Ortiz across the plate.
In the third inning, Marco Garza (Jr./Mission,
Texas/Sharyland HS) led off with a double down the left field line. A
sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez moved Garza to scoring position at
third. The shortstop mishandled a grounder from Ortiz and Garza
crossed the plate to make it 3-0.
The Roadrunners mounted a comeback
starting in the fourth inning. With one out, Lucas Stewart singled to
third base. Chris Lewis then homered over the left field wall to make it
3-2. In the fifth inning, J.R. Voyles started the inning by getting hit
by a pitch. He moved to second on a ground out. Sam Mitchell then sent
the ball down the left field line and over the fence to give UTSA the lead 4-3.
Texas-Pan American was not quite ready to
surrender its winning streak. In the fifth inning, with one out, errors allowed
T.J. Gilmer (So./Forney, Texas/Forney HS) and Garza to reach base.
Rodriguez hit a single to the shortstop that drove in Gilmer. The
shortstop attempted to get Garza out but his throw went into the outfield
and pushed Garza to third. Ortiz hit a sharp grounder to second
base that scored Garza. In the sixth inning, the Broncs picked up an
insurance run as Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS)
singled to score Eichel.
For UTPA, Rodriguez was 2-for-3
with 1 run and one RBI and Flowers was 2-for-2 with 1 RBI. Alamia
moved his hitting streak to 19 games and his reaching base safely streak to 33
games. Juan Saenz moved to 4-0 as he gave up five hits, four runs and
struck out five batters in six innings. John Lopez (Jr./Mission,
Texas/Mission HS) gave up one hit and struck out four batters in three innings
for his first save. The Broncs's bullpen has now gone 14 and one-third
consecutive innings without giving up a run.
For Texas-San Antonio, Stewart was
2-for-4 while Mitchell and Lewis drove in two runs each. Aaron
Rodriguez fell to 0-1 as he gave up eight hits, six runs, one earned run and
struck out four batters in six innings.
"Our pitching set the tone tonight." Said
head coach Willie Gawlik. "Juan did a great job for us. He kept us
in the game. John had an outstanding performance giving up one hit in
three innings. He came on in the sixth inning with two on and no one out. He got
a strike out, a fly out and a fielder's choice to get us out of the inning. The
bullpen has been clutch for us lately. We played good defense tonight and we
were getting the bunt's down. UTSA is a real good team and we have to come out
tomorrow and play aggressive like we did tonight."
Texas-Pan American and Texas-San Antonio
will do battle again Saturday at 7:00 p.m.. The series will conclude Sunday at
1:00 p.m.
