March 17, 2004

Box Score

Edinburg, Texas - Texas-Arlington (12-8) gained revenge with a 13-5 win over Texas-Pan American (13-12) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium today. The Broncs had beaten the Mavericks 7-5 last night.

Kasey Baker singled to right center to open the top of the first inning. Following a fly out, Hunter Pence doubled to right center to move Baker to third. With two outs, Darrell Preston's grounder was mishandled by the shortstop allowing Baker to score.

In the bottom of the first, Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) led off with a walk to extend his reaching base safely streak to 36 games. Alamia stole third and then moved to third on a fly out to center field by Tony Ortiz (Jr./Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan HS). Phillip Rodriguez (Fr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) reached on an error that scored Alamia.

The Mavericks broke the game open by scoring four runs in the second inning. By the eighth inning, Texas-Arlington was up 10-3. UTPA attempted a rally as Marco Garza (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS) was hit by a pitch and Ryan Grimet (Fr./Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) walked. Alfred Padron (Jr./Pasadena, Texas/Alvin JC) came in to run for Grimet. Matt Sisk (Sr./Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights HS) singled through the right side to load the bases. Mark Rodriguez (Jr./San Antonio, Texas/Howard College) hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line to score Garza and moved Padron to third. A wild pitch would score Padron. UTA scored three in the ninth and got the Broncs to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth for the game.

"We just flat out gave them the game." Said head coach Willie Gawlik. "We didn't pitched very well, didn't hit the ball and we struggled on defense. We just didn't come out to play today and that is very disappointing."

Texas-Pan American ends their long home stretch with a three game series vs. Oral Roberts on March 19-21. The games on Friday the 19th and Saturday the 20th are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. The game on Sunday the 21st is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
