SAN ANTONIO, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's
women's tennis team lost its season opener to Texas-El Paso, 7-0 in San Antonio
Saturday afternoon. UTPA is 0-1 on the season.
The Lady Broncs put up a battle at number
one doubles as the team of Alana Breen (Sr./Whistler, British Columbia,
Canada/Whistler Secondary) and Vanessa Hedinger (Fr./Therwil,
Switzerland/Gymnasium Berwil) lost to Adriana Boykova and Martina Rezar, 9-8
(7-1). Hedinger played a tough match at number one singles, falling 6-4,
6-2 to Rezar.
"For our first match, this was an eye
opener," said UTPA women's assistant tennis coach Kati Gyulai. "Vanessa and
Alana should have won at number one doubles. They played a tough match but came
up short. Vanessa had a pretty solid match at one singles. Ana Pena (Jr.
/McAllen, Texas/Nikki Rowe HS) and Natalie Gonzalez (Fr. /McAllen, Texas/Nikki
Rowe HS) put up a tough fight in their single matches. Overall, I thought we
played pretty well, and we got to see what we need to work on."
The Lady Broncs will return to action when
they visit Sam Houston State next Friday afternoon.
