Huntsville, Texas - It was a wild day as Sam Houston
State edged Texas-Pan American 4-3. The match was originally scheduled for 3:00
p.m. Due to bad weather, it was moved indoors at the Woodlands Country Club at
7:00 p.m. and it didn't end until just before midnight.
In a reverse move, the singles were played
first and UTPA (0-2) headed into doubles tied with the Bearkats at 3-3.
Vanessa Hedinger (Fr./Therwil, Switzerland/Gymnasium Berwil) needed three
sets to get past Mounia Hassib, 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 at Number 1 Singles. At
Number 5, Ana Pena (Jr./McAllen, Texas/Nikki Rowe HS) defeated Bethany
Yurkiw, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. In her first match of the year, Jessica Chavez
(Fr./Pharr, Texas/PSJA North HS) defeated Amanda Jung, 1-6, 7-6, 6-2.
The Bearkats took all three doubles to win
the match. "It was just an awesome match." said head coach Eduardo Provencio.
" I'm just so incredibly proud of our girls. We got down 3-0 in singles quite
quickly and Vanessa, Ana and Jessica just toughed it out. I think
this is a marker for what we can do for the rest of the season."
The Lady Broncs are back in action
tomorrow, taking on Northwestern State. The match is scheduled to start at1:30
p.m.
