Edinburg,
Texas - Air Force (10-5) defeated Texas-Pan American (1-6) 6-1 at the
Orville Cox Tennis Center today. The Falcons had beaten the Lady Broncs 7-0
last year. UTPA finishes the home season on April 3 taking on Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
Natalie Gonzalez
(Fr./McAllen, Texas/Nikki Rowe HS) and Ana Pena (Jr./McAllen, Texas/Nikki
Rowe HS) battled back for an 8-6 win over Kelly Morgan and Liza
Vaccaro at Number 3 Doubles. Gonzalez and Pena were down 6-3,
before stunning the Falcons by winning five straight games to take the match.
Pena was also victorious in her match at Number 3 Singles. She defeated
Gina Black, 6-4, 6-1.
"I saw a lot of
positive things in the match today." Said assistant coach Kati Gyulai.
"Natalie and Ana just gritted their teeth and came fighting back.
That was a great win. Ana carried that great effort over into her
singles match. Her effort translated into a very good win over a tough
competitor in Black. Elysia Sloan (So./Duncanville,
Texas/Duncanville HS) played an outstanding first set at Number 2 Singles.
Natalie showed outstanding sportsmanship today. After playing a doubles
match and a singles match, she agreed to play an 8-point pro set so Air Force's
Number 7 girl could get some experience."
