EDINBURG, TX-Texas State-San Marcos grabbed an early lead in the fifth game and held on to defeat The University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team, 28-30, 30-19, 30-25, 30-32 and 15-10 at the UTPA Fieldhouse Tuesday evening.

The Bobcats scored the first four points of the final game and were never headed, spoiling a fourth-game rally by the Lady Broncs that saw them come from behind to take game four, 32-30 and send the match into a fifth and decisive game.

Senior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) led Texas-Pan American with 15 kills, while junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) and sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) added 12 each. Redd added three blocks and hit .281, while Netemeyer had seven digs and hit .233. Freshman outside hitter Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango HS) added 18 digs, while freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) added 15.

Stephanie Torregrosa led the Bobcats with 22 kills, Kelly Fletcher and Kacee Rogers added 15 apiece, and Amy Amundson added 14. TSU out hit UTPA, .222 to .144, and amassed 80 kills to the Lady Broncs' 53.

"We made too many errors," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "We have to make the plays at the end of the game. We can't expect a team as good as they were to make mistakes at the end of the match. We have to capitalize on our opportunities, and we didn't do that tonight. Momentum is very fickle in volleyball. We might have expended so much energy coming back in the fourth game that we didn't have it at the start of the fifth."

TSU-San Marcos, which was known as Southwest Texas State until September 1st, improved to 3-5, while Texas-Pan American fell to 3-5. The Lady Broncs will return to action when they visit Texas Christian Friday night in the first round of the TCU Adidas Invitational.
