FORT WORTH, TX-For the third straight tournament, The
University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team won their third and final
match. The Lady Broncs defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 30-24, 30-15 and
30-22, in their last match at the TCU Adidas Invitational Saturday.
Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) led the Lady
Broncs with 13 kills, while senior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut,
CA/Walnut HS) added 12. Freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI
HS) added 14 digs, and freshman setter Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial
HS) had 37 assists as Texas-Pan American limited UAPB to a hitting percentage of
.031. Brandi DeBose and Jaquinta Hopkins had seven kills apiece for the Golden
Lions.
Redd represented the Lady Broncs on the All-Tournament Team.
"We played better, and we seemed to play with more
consistency," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "When we do that, we'll be a lot
stronger. Karen did a decent job as the setter, especially starting her first
match. She connected with our middle hitters, and that helped our attack. Carol
had an excellent tournament. She battles every single match, is a monster in the
backcourt, and she erases some of our mistakes. It's good to end the tournament
with a win."
The Lady Broncs dropped their first match Saturday to Arkansas State, losing to
the Lady Indians in three games, 30-13, 30-22 and 30-16 at the University
Recreation Center.
Muszynski had seven kills and seven digs for UTPA, while Marcengo had 11 digs.
"Arkansas State is legitimate," said Thorn. "They have a lot of seniors, and
they were tough."
Leading the way for Arkansas State was Giedre Tarnauskaite
who had 14 kills and hit .303, while Caitlyn Mitchell and Tessa Millikan had 13
digs each. The Lady Indians improved to 8-2 on the season.
The Lady Broncs improved to 4-7 with their victory against the Golden Lions,
while UAPB dropped to 3-7. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they
visit Prairie View A&M's tournament next weekend.
