EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's
volleyball team continued their roll, winning their sixth match in a row Tuesday
evening. The Lady Broncs defeated Incarnate Word, 30-16, 30-27 and 30-17 at the
UTPA Fieldhouse.
Texas-Pan American turned in a strong defensive effort, recording 48 digs and 11
blocks in three games and holding the Crusaders to a hitting percentage of .000.
The Lady Broncs pulled away early in the first game, then held off a late UIW
charge in the second game to win by three points.
"We knew the second game would be closer, because Incarnate
Word made a lot of mistakes in the first game that they didn't make in the
second. They came out stronger in the second game, and so did we, and I was
pleased with that."
Junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, CA/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) led
the UTPA attack, hitting .562 with 11 kills. Senior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) added 10 kills and seven digs while freshman
libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) added 22 digs, recording 20 or
more digs for the fifth consecutive match. Freshman setter Karen Lyons (McAllen,
TX/McAllen Memorial HS) added 21 assists. Amanda Carrejo had seven kills for UIW,
while Michaela Settlemeyer and Adria Martineau added seven digs apiece.
"I was pleased with our play overall," said Thorn. "Incarnate Word came out
strong in game two, and made it a close game, and I was pleased with the way we
responded in the third game. I was really pleased with our defense. Carol had 22
digs in three games, that's more than seven digs a game, and we also had 11
blocks.
The Lady Broncs improved to 9-7 with their victory, and the
Crusaders fell to 8-8. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they visit
Texas A&M-International Saturday.
