LAREDO, TX-It took a comeback for The University of Texas-Pan
American's volleyball team to win their seventh match in a row Saturday. The
Lady Broncs won the last two games to defeat Texas A&M-International, 30-28,
27-30, 27-30, 30-24 and 15-9 at the TAMIU Kinesiology Convocation Building.
The Lady Broncs won the match on defense, recording 100 digs and 17 blocks and
holding the DustDevils to a hitting percentage of .160. Texas-Pan American hit
just .127.
Freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) had
29 digs to lead UTPA's defensive effort. It was the sixth consecutive match in
which she has recorded 20 or more digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin
HS) had 10 kills and eight blocks, freshman outside hitter Heather Bravo (Las
Vegas, NV/Durango HS) had 14 kills and 16 digs, junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, CA/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) had 10 kills and 10 digs, and
freshman outside hitter Jennifer Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) had seven
kills and seven blocks.
"I was happy that we won, and kept our winning streak going,
but I wasn't thrilled with the way we played," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn.
"We had way too many unforced errors, and Texas A&M-International played very
well. We blocked them, and they covered every single block, and they dug
everything that we hit. You have to give them credit. Carol played very well for
us. We started making more plays in the last two games, and we played with more
confidence, and that's why we won."
The Lady Broncs improved to 10-7 with their victory, while
TAMIU dropped to 5-4. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they visit
Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday evening.
