EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's volleyball team used a record-breaking effort to defeat their arch-rivals Saturday evening. The Lady Broncs won the final two games of the match and defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 30-23, 27-30, 30-25 and 30-24 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) recorded 25 digs. It was the ninth consecutive match in which she has recorded 20 or more digs. She now has 381 digs, breaking the single-season school record of 380 set by Tara Gallagher in 1993.

"She got the record, and we have almost half a season to go," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "She was able to make some great plays, and she gives us opportunities that we wouldn't have otherwise. She's a special player, and it's great to have her on our team."

Senior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) had 16 kills and 20 digs to lead the Lady Broncs. Sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) and freshman outside hitter Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango HS) added 14 kills apiece, while junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) added 10. Melanie Travis had 17 kills for the Islanders, while Kaley Rombs had 18 digs.

"We made some unforced errors towards the end of game two, but we came back and took control of games three and four," said Thorn. "In the intermission between games two and three, we said that we needed to come out with more intensity, and that's what we did."

The Lady Broncs improved to 11-9 with the victory, while TAMU-CC fell to 7-13. Texas-Pan American will return to action when they host Texas A&M-International Tuesday evening.
