EDINBURG, TX-The University of Texas-Pan American's
volleyball team is putting together another winning streak. The Lady
Broncs won their second match in a row, defeating Texas A&M-International,
30-23, 30-26, and 30-18 at the UTPA Fieldhouse Tuesday evening.
Freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) led Texas-Pan American
with 21 digs. It was the 10th consecutive match in which she has recorded 20 or
more digs. Marcengo, who broke the single-season record for digs last Saturday,
now has 401 digs, and is the first Lady Bronc player to amass 400 digs in a
season.
Senior outside hitter Jaclyn Muszynski (Walnut, CA/Walnut HS) and junior outside
hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los Fresnos HS/Iowa) led the Lady Broncs
with nine kills each. Freshman outside hitter Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria,
BC/Mount Douglas SS) added seven kills and seven digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin HS) had seven blocks and Netemeyer, sophomore
middle blocker Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial HS) and freshman
outside hitter Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango HS) each had six as the Lady
Broncs out blocked the DustDevils, 14-1.
Jessica Vargas led Texas A&M-International with 10 kills, while Victoria Ramirez
and Sivonney Molina added six kills apiece.
"It's always good to win, and it was good to see us come out
and play hard," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "We got ahead in the first
game, then we made some unforced errors on our side of the net. We came back,
and we had 14 blocks to their one. It was nice to see Chrissie Carrigan step in
and do a nice job. Carol had another good game, and our hitting was balanced."
The Lady Broncs improved to 12-9 with the victory, while TAMIU fell to 6-6.
Texas-Pan American will return to action when they host the Lady Bronc alumni
team Friday evening.
