SAN ANTONIO, TX-Texas-San Antonio pulled ahead in the fifth
and final game and went on to defeat The University of Texas-Pan American's
volleyball team, 30-20, 27-30, 30-23, 22-30 and 15-13, at the Convocation Center
Wednesday night.
The teams battled on virtually even terms in the fifth game,
with neither holding more than a one-point lead until UTSA scored the final
point of the match.
Junior outside hitter Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/Los
Fresnos HS/Iowa) led UTPA with 21 kills and three blocks. Freshman libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI HS) had 21 digs, recording her 12th consecutive
match with 20 or more digs. Freshman outside hitter Heather Bravo (Las Vegas,
NV/Durango HS) and freshman setter Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial HS)
had 19 digs each, while Lyons added 30 assists.
"We battled very hard, and both teams left everything they
had on the court tonight," said UTPA Head Coach Dave Thorn. "We started out
slowly, came back in game two, then won game four, and there was never any
spread in game five until the end. It was a battle all the way, and they just
made a couple of plays at the end when they needed them."
UTPA fell to 12-11 with the defeat, while UTSA improved to
11-9. The Lady Broncs will return to action when they play Connecticut Saturday
afternoon at Corpus Christi.
