Corpus
Christi, Texas - A very long and tough season came to an end on a good
note. Texas-Pan American (4-12) lost 7-0 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-6) and
rebounded to beat IPFW (9-19) 6-1 on the final day of the NCAA Division I
Independent Championships. UTPA has concluded the 2003-04 season.
Against Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi, the Lady Broncs were just overwhelmed. Putting up good
battles were Ana Pena (Jr./McAllen, Texas/Nikki Rowe HS) at Number 3
Singles and Alana Breen (Sr./Whistler, British Columbia, Canada/Whistler
Secondary) at Number 5 Singles.
UTPA turned it
around against IPFW as they won two of the three doubles matches and all but one
of the six singles matches. Breen came from behind in her final match
for UTPA to take a 3-6, 6-2 (12-10) win over Lisa Bartelheim at Number 5
Singles. Jessica Chavez (Fr./Pharr, Texas/PSJA North HS), who joined the
team at mid-season as a walk-on, blew past Jessica Vervynckt, 6-0, 6-1 at
Number Six Singles.
"It's great to
end the season on a win," said Assistant Coach Kati Gyulai. "With
injuries and only three veterans on the team, this has been a very tough and
long season for us. The ladies have really played strong over the last seven
matches. I'm proud of the effort that they have put forth."
