Austin, Texas - The third
ranked Texas Longhorns (29-4) scores six runs late in the game to turn back
Texas-Pan American (14-20) 10-1. The Broncs are off until April 6-7, when they
travel to San Marcos to take on Texas State-San Marcos. The game on the 6th
is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. with the game on the 7th scheduled
to go at 1:00 p.m.
Texas-Pan
American drew first blood on the third ranked Longhorns. In the second inning
with two outs, Aaron Flowers (Jr./Rowlett, Texas/Northeast Texas CC) was
hit by a pitch. A bunt single by Ricky Broyles (Jr./Longview,
Texas/Northeast Texas CC) moved Flowers to second. John Lopez
(Jr./Mission, Texas/Mission HS) singled to center field to score Flowers
and make it 1-0, Broncs.
In the top of
the third, Michael Hollimon led off with a solo home run to left field.
Nick Peoples walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Curtis
Thigpen walked and a fielder's choice moved Peoples to third and
Thigpen to second. Taylor Teagarden was hit by a pitch to load the
bases for Carson Kainer, who singled to third base to score Peoples
and make it 2-1.
Texas would
score two runs in the fifth and held a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning.
The Longhorns broke the game open by scoring two runs in the seventh and four in
the eighth.
For UTPA,
Lopez was 3-for-4 and drove in a run while Louie Alamia (So. Edinburg,
Texas/Edinburg North HS) had a hit, stole a base and extended his reaching base
safely streak to 45 straight games. Tommy Sorden (Sr./Austin,
Texas/Navarro College) gave up six hits, four runs, walked three and struck out
two batters in four and two-third innings to drop to 2-3.
For Texas,
Kainer was 2-for-3 and drove in a run, J.D. Reininger scored two runs
and Thigpen scored two runs and drove in two runs. Kyle McCulloch
gave up five hits, one run, walked one and struck out three in five innings to
improve to 4-0.
"You can't
walk 10 guys and expect to win ballgames," said Head Coach Willie Gawlik.
"We are right in the game with the number three team in the country going into
the seventh inning. If you walk enough guys, someone is going to come up with
the clutch hit."
