Edinburg,
Texas - For the second time this season, bad weather forced Texas-Pan
American to finish a match indoors. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-5) beat the
Lady Broncs (1-7) 6-0 in a match that was finished at The Summit, which closes
out the home portion of the schedule. UTPA will play Texas Southern on the
road, April 7. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
Before the
match started, Texas-Pan American honored its lone senior; Alana Breen
(Sr./Whistler, British Columbia, Canada/Whistler Secondary). Breen ranks
among the top 20 in career singles and overall wins in UTPA history.
Vanessa Hedinger
(Fr./Therwil, Switzerland/Gymnasium Berwil) had the match of the day at Number
One Singles vs. Carlota Santos. Hedinger lost the first set 6-3
but bounced back to force a tie breaker with a 6-1 win in the second set. In
the tie breaker, Santos fought off two match points to win 12-10.
"I saw much
improvement in our doubles play today," said Assistant Coach Kati Gyulai.
"Vanessa and Elysia Sloan (So./Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville HS)
have really improved at Number One Doubles as the season has progressed. At
Number Two Doubles, Natalie Gonzalez (Fr./McAllen, Texas/Nikki Rowe HS)
and Ana Pena (Jr./McAllen, Texas/Nikki Rowe HS) get better each time
out. Vanessa put up a nice fight to come back from 1-0 in her singles
match. She had two chances to win in the tie breaker but came up short. It was
disappointing that Alana couldn't play her last home match because of an
injury. We will miss her contributions to the team next year."
