San Marcos, Texas - Texas
State-San Marcos (17-15) rallied from an early deficit to defeat Texas-Pan
American (14-21) 6-5 in 11 innings, Tuesday evening. The Bobcats and Broncs
will play again tomorrow with the game scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
Texas-Pan
American got on the scoreboard in its first at-bat. Louie Alamia (So./Edinburg,
Texas/Edinburg North HS) drew a walk to reach base safely for the 46th
consecutive game. Alamia moved to second on a wild pitch and stayed
there as Marco Garza (Jr./Mission, Texas/Sharyland HS) was walked.
Tony Ortiz (Jr./Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan HS) ripped a double to left field to
score Alamia and move Garza to third. Following a strike out,
Ryan Grimet (Fr./Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) walked to load the bases. The
shortstop mishandled a ground ball hit by Ben DiOrio (Sr./Canon City,
Colo./Seward County CC), which allowed Garza to score.
Texas-State San
Marcos would get a run in the bottom of the second. The Broncs came right back
in the third inning. Ortiz led off with a single to right field. A
fielder's choice got Ortiz out at second and allowed Phillip Rodriguez
(Fr./Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg North HS) to reach first. Two consecutive wild
pitches put Rodriguez in scoring position. Grimet walked for the
second time to put runners at the corners. DiOrio was thrown out at
first on a grounder that moved Grimet to second and pushed Rodriguez
across the plate. The Bobcats then threw two straight wild pitches to score
Grimet and make it 4-1 UTPA.
In the bottom
of the fifth, Doug Pearce led off by getting hit by a pitch. A double to
left center from Patrick Crumpton scored Pearce. Nolan Mast
singled through the left side to move Crumpton to third, who then came
home on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Anson to make it 4-3.
In the eighth
inning Ortiz led off with a single to center field and moved to second on
a ground out. Following a strike out, DiOrio singled to center field to score Ortiz to put the Broncs up 5-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Anson led off with a double to right center. A sacrifice bunt moved Anson to third. Matt
Miller tied the game with a two-run home run.
In the bottom
of the ninth, the Bobcats threatened as they had one out and a runner on first.
Ricky Broyles (Jr./Longview, Texas/Northeast Texas CC) came in to pitch
and got a ground out and a strike out to send the game into extra innings. In
the bottom of the 11th, Dominic Ramos drew a walk and moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt. Crumpton singled to center field to score
Ramos to end the game.
For UTPA,
Ortiz was 3-for-5, had a double, scored a run and drove in a run, DiOrio
drove in three runs and John Lopez (Jr./Mission, Texas/Mission HS) was
2-for-4. Broyles gave up two hits, one run and struck out three batters
in two innings as he fell to 0-3.
For Texas
State-San Marcos, Anson was 2-for-4, Mark Cooper was 2-for-5 and
Crumpton was 2-for-5 and drove in two runs. Michael Gultz gave up
one hit and struck out one batter in three innings to improve to 3-0.
"We had great chances to score a lot of runs early and didn't," said Head Coach
Willie Gawlik. "We pitched well enough to win tonight, we just didn't
score. Texas State-San Marcos had a bunch of bang-bang plays defensively that
hurt us. Ricky came into a tough situation with one on and one out in
the ninth. Getting the next two batters out kept us in the game."
