The University of Texas-Pan American (4-4) women's volleyball team suffered a straight set loss (25-30, 28-30, 22-30) to UTEP (3-2) in the final day of action at the Texas Tech Red Raider Round-Up on Saturday (Sept. 11) in Lubbock, TX.
"UTEP played extremely well, and we just made too many mental errors to overcome," said head coach Dave Thorn.
The Miners were led by Megan Maynard, who finished with a game-high 20 kills, while Kari Stacy racked up a double-double (kills-digs) with 16 kills and 11 digs. Katie Smith dished out a game-high 50 assists, and Brittany Stowers added 32 digs for UTEP.
Senior Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa) and sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) each notched eight kills apiece for UTPA, who concluded the match with a .133 hitting percentage. Bravo also added eight digs and a single service ace.
Sophomore Jen Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin H.S.) dished out 23 assists, and Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with 23 digs - her sixth 20-plus dig performance in eight contests. Senior Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) recorded seven kills and 15 digs while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) added 12 assists and 13 digs.
UTEP held a 57-40 advantage in the kill category along with 53 assists to the Lady Broncs' 39. For the match, the Miners finished with a hitting percentage of .237.
UTPA will be back in action next Saturday (Sept. 18) at Texas A&M - International for a single match against the Dustdevils. Match time is slated for 4 p.m.
