UTPA Finishes Even at Texas Tech Invitational

Even though The University of Texas - Pan American volleyball team wrapped up its first day of action at the Red Raider Round-Up in Lubbock, TX, with a 1-1 record, head coach Dave Thorn was pleased with the Lady Broncs' performance in their two matches on Friday (Sept. 10).

"After losing to Texas Tech in the first match, I was pleased with the way that our team responded in the second match by defeating North Texas for the first time in program history. We really played well in that match, and I was happy with the way that we played in spots, especially in the second and third games, against Tech. I'm really excited to play UTEP tomorrow and see how our team will finish up this tournament," said Thorn.

Below is a recap of UTPA's first day of action:

UTPA 3, North Texas 1 (30-12, 30-32, 30-24, 30-20)
UTPA ended a 10-match losing streak against The University of North Texas in four sets (30-12, 30-32, 30-24, 30-20) for its first victory over the Lady Eagles in program history.

Senior Winker Cruz (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) led the charge for the Lady Broncs as she notched 17 kills and 14 digs while finishing with a hitting percentage of .472 (17-0-36) during the match. Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) racked up her second double-double (kills-digs) of the day, finishing with 11 kills and 13 digs.

UTPA finished with a hitting percentage of .250 (68-21-188) compared to the Lady Eagles' .130 (56-32-184). The Lady Broncs also held a 62-51 advantage in assists and 10.0-4.0 mark in total blocks.

Sophomore Jen Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin H.S.) finished with a match-high 30 assists while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) dished out 21 assists of her own. For the second consecutive match, sophomore Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with 29 digs, ending the day with 59 total digs. She has recorded 20 or more digs in five of UTPA's first seven matches.

Senior Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa) and junior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial) each finished with six block assists apiece, and Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) had 10 kills and four blocks.

Katy Prokof led North Texas with 16 kills, and Heidi Johnson and Brittney Gregory dished out 24 and 19 assists, respectively. Jessica Hulsebosch finished with a team high 22 digs.

Texas Tech 3, University of Texas - Pan American 1 (21-30, 25-30, 30-22, 18-30)
UTPA fell to Texas Tech in the first round of the Red Raider Round-Up in four sets (21-30, 25-30, 30-22, 18-30) on Friday (Sept. 10) in Lubbock, TX.

Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) finished the contest with a game-high 18 kills and added 12 digs. It was the third time this season that the UTPA outside hitter finished with a double-double (kills-digs).

Libero Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) finished with a game-high 30 digs, which was the fourth time in her career that she has eclipsed the 30-dig plateau. Sophomores Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) and Jen Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin H.S.) quarterbacked the offense as the duo finished with 25 and 20 assists, respectively.

Nina Miller and Kiley Lyons led the Red Raiders with 11 kills apiece while senior Laura Grote finished with a game-high 30 assists. Texas Tech had a trio of players in double figures in digs with Amy Charlebois (17 digs), Desiree Batista (15 digs) and Lyons (11 digs).

The Red Raiders held a 12.5 - 5.0 advantage in total blocks over UTPA, and the Lady Broncs really hurt their cause by committing 42 errors compared to 20 errors from Texas Tech in the four-game contest.

The Lady Broncs will square off against The University of Texas - El Paso at 12:00 p.m. at the Red Raider Round-Up on Saturday (Sept. 11).
